mameya
A moment to unwind in the city.
In Kyoto's Nakagyo Ward, mameya pairs light confections made from prized Tanba black soybeans with carefully prepared pour-over coffee, complete with a relaxing sofa tucked into the back.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A short walk south of the intersection of Sembon and Oike streets, mameya is a compact shop centered on confections and pantry items made from Tanba black soybeans. A staple favorite among the offerings is the kinako black soybeans, known for an airy, crisp crunch and a gentle, rustic sweetness that keeps you reaching back for more.
Browsing for bean snacks is only part of the experience here; enjoying a freshly brewed cup of coffee is just as central. A small sofa tucked in the back lets guests watch their coffee being made cup by cup with a paper pour-over filter. The shop occasionally stocks distinctive roasted beans that are difficult to find elsewhere—such as a Brazilian variety carrying notes reminiscent of rum—making for an aromatic, leisurely pause.
With only a handful of seats in its intimate interior, the shop often sees visitors chatting easily with the owner. It works just as well for picking up thoughtful gifts that showcase the region's Tanba harvest as it does for stepping in during a walk around town to unwind over a fragrant brew.
